The Whatcom County Triage Center (WCTC) in Bellingham can accommodate up to 16 individuals at once who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Services include crisis stabilization, safety planning, and referrals for ongoing care. Individuals may self-refer or be referred by a community partner such as a behavioral health provider, hospital social worker, or medical provider. The facility can also accept drop-offs from law enforcement and emergency medical technicians as a diversion alternative to jail or the emergency room. The Alternative Response Team (ART) is an innovative program that benefits people having mental or behavioral health challenges, and our police personnel, allowing them to respond to other emergent calls requiring law enforcement intervention.

A facility offering prompt assessment and brief-term treatment for individuals aged 18 and under facing mental or emotional health crises, including suicidal risks. The facility is designed for brief interventions, with a maximum stay of 23 hours and 59 minutes.

Designated Crisis Responders provide legal assessment of grave disability and/or danger to self or others as a result of a mental health or substance use disorder for possible involuntary detention to a behavioral health facility. As a component of the evaluation, it must be determined that other, less restrictive options for stabilization of the crisis have been ruled out or deemed inappropriate.
