The Whatcom County Triage Center (WCTC) in Bellingham can accommodate up to 16 individuals at once who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Individuals may self-refer or be referred by a community partner such as a behavioral health provider, hospital social worker, or medical provider. The facility can also accept drop-offs from law enforcement and emergency medical technicians as a diversion alternative to jail or the emergency room.

Designated Crisis Responders provide legal assessment of grave disability and/or danger to self or others as a result of a mental health or substance use disorder for possible involuntary detention to a behavioral health facility. As a component of the evaluation, it must be determined that other, less restrictive options for stabilization of the crisis have been ruled out or deemed inappropriate.
